Critics weren’t kind to Joe Dirt. It has an average rating of three out of 10 and one of the well-known multiple review sites. It received a thumbs down from Ebert. They called it strained and predictable and said the storyline was absurd. However, they did complement Spade’s performance.
It pulled in nearly $30 million in the USA. That means Joe Dirt was profitable. Its budget was only $16 million. It also made it to number one in New Zealand. Some of the stars quipped that New Zealand was smaller than WalMart. Dennis Miller often mentions the movie. He’s even interviewed David Spade about it.
Joe Dirt works at a Los Angeles radio station as a low paid janitor. A producer discovers Joe and his funny white trash habits. He puts Joe with a disc jockey who interviews him on the air. The movie is Joe telling his story.
The story of Joe Dirt begins with the pursuit of his love interest Brandy. Joe decides to try to find his parents after Brandy loses her dog. He travels the country. He does a lot of weird things. He also meets a number of odd characters. He also takes on many odd jobs. That’s how he came to work at the station.
Eventually Joe Dirt gives up a search and returns to Brandy. He finds out that she knows that his parents were killed while he was visiting the Grand Canyon. The search was for nothing.
Joe Dirt has become popular with listeners. He’s a celebrity. His mother, supposedly, calls him. She’s trying to use him. She wants to sell Joe Dirt figures. Both she and his father want to get rich off of him.
At the end of the movie Joe Dirt tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. An officer saves him with a bungee cord. But he hits his head on the way back up. He awakens with all the people he’s met surrounding him. He has finally found a family. It’s pretty bad. No wonder critics didn’t like the movie.
Nobody knows how a movie like Joe Dirt gets made in the first place.
