The beginning to every story is having an idea, the storyline of your novel. This is called the plot. Your plot can be whatever you desire, but it needs to be interesting and have both conflict and resolution. When you start to actually write, your main idea will help the other components of your story come together. The plot will need to have a constant flow of action and interesting dialogue to hold the reader’s attention.

Character creation is your next step. Characters drive the action of your novel, and poor characters can kill a good story faster than a bad plot. In the majority of novels, you will find a protagonist and an antagonist involved in some kind of conflict. The protagonist is your main character, while the antagonist is the main villainous character. Your secondary characters are just as important, so don’t let them fall flat. All of your characters need to be realistic, with their own pasts, personalities, and vernacular.

Now the part where most people give up: writing their novel. It is not always easy, but there are ways to make it easier. Make sure you have your own writing space somewhere free of distractions and with a comfortable chair. Write every day! Making it a habit, whether it is a paragraph or a chapter, will set you up for success.

Do lots of editing and rewriting of your material! No writer has ever made too many revisions because all stories can always be improved. Revisions are perhaps the biggest key to a well-executed novel. You can even ask a friend to read and evaluate your work. Their criticism can be very constructive.
